Bring Your Own Bottle Overview
My story as a drinking alcoholic starts New Years day 1992 and ends on Independence Day the 4th of July 2006. ”Bring your own bottle” will give you the facts of my personal story, how I catapulted into a world of self-destruct and how I, at some point, realised I had to stop drinking or my life would not be worth living. Then, after having made that decision it took another ten years before I finally managed to kick the bottle.
Why am I doing this, you may ask? Well, I am a journalist. I know I was born with the gift of writing. I have never felt enough empathy towards my fellow human beings to become some kind of full time support worker. I have no wish to wallow in my own sad drunken memories anymore, so why would I want to wallow in someone else’s? At the same time, I have always believed we are born with a purpose.
When writing this I am 42 years old. That means that I have spent exactly a third of my life accompanied by a bottle. Maybe this is just me wanting to give a meaning to those years, who knows? Personally, I feel that since I got out of the bottle with enough brain cells intact to still be able to write, it is my responsibility to put my story down on paper. I may not care too much for my fellow man in general, but if this story would give someone a bit of hope or help, no one would be happier than I.
